The water looks like "green slime", never saw it this way before.....those are reports from certain areas of Lake Okeechobee and Lake Toho. Not good news. If enough oxygen is depleted by the blooms, fish will die. Areas covered in the algae will have no light to the bottom allowing plant growth.
The lakes are so turbid and full of suspended nutrients the danger of substantial algae blooms will last all summer. Dr. Susan Gray, Director Lake Okeechobee Div. SFWMD, will be giving an update on the lake's condition at the WRAC meeting June 2 at the Jupiter Beach Resort.
