The FWC wishes UW to be involved w/ its Summer youth hunter ed camps. A couple of years ago, UW presented to the Summer campers a condensed waterfowling session. The sessions lasted about 2 hours an afternoon and once a week during June and July.
UW needs folks to present the sessions at the Summer camp in Ocala Natl Forest.
I will have an agenda for those wishing to help.
Please post up as soon as possible.
Thanx,
Duke

Sounds great Duke. I encourage members in the area to get involved. These youth programs are a blast and very rewarding.
Duke, will there be any expenses to cover? Just let us know how we can help. :icon_salu

Duke....it would help if you would post the proposed schedule for the workshops...Place where the person/s would need to go, date and time of day. Then people could see if they can be available.....I am sure we have several who would want to do them......also, if you have an agenda of what was presented in the program, that would give guideance and confidence to those who are considering doing it.....ie....gun safety, water safety, duck idenity, calling ,decoys etc.
Thanks

So...there are about six opportunities during the summer on Thursdays....are all of these at the same location? Where is/are the location/s.....and last, who should the volunteer/s contact to set up their presentation date and time.
There should be several members who would be able to split these dates up and do the ones near their homes.
Thanks for the help.

I spoke with Phil Harper today and he's willing. He's knowledgable and lives close.
Yes, the sessions will be lake side, unless rain. Then there will be a roof provided.
The location is at the fwc camp facilities in the Ocala Natl Forest.
I'll get more info.

Thanks Duke....you started a good tradition for UW-F by participating and it will be good to see it continue. I am sure Phil and Wilbur and others can do a great job.

I spoke with Duke today and he is being very helpful....will give info to each of those who do the seminars....evidently there will be a total of five....we seem to have Phil, Wilbur and Joe already volunteering.....we need two more and/or others who would go and assist. This is a great opportunity to do a good deed and have fun.....
Duke will be posting up other info.
Thanks to all.

The dates and times are......
June 23, 30, July 14,21,28. (each of these dates are on Thurs.)
from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
Instructors should arrive a bit early to set up.
Cardinal collins is the director of the Summer camps.
Location will be at the Hunter Ed Training Facilities in the Ocala Natl. Forest located off of Hwy 314 in the forest.
Duke
P.S. If there are questions please ask. I should have program together by then. Also, it would be helpful if instructor were to bring an example of different decoys and maybe some other gear. A duckboat would be neat for the kids to look at. If ya'll have photo albumns, this would be good. Oh, feel free to bring duck calls, since this is part of it.

Duke....do you have the phone number for Cardinal Collins? We will need to contact him and set up the presentations, etc.
uncle D
06-04-2005, 09:48 AM
Newton,
Being that C. Collins is scrambling to work out his schedule and counselors, it might be best that we organize our staff and schedule according to the given dates.
i.e. Phil H. June 33, Joe R. June 30, etc...
Once we have it together, we'll give the FWC a list of instructors
BTW, he is looking for counselors and staff for the Summer camps, PLUS there are slots available for more kids.
The number for the camp is 352-625-2804 for registration/application and directions.
Cardinal did mention that it might be good if an UW instructor make his Staff pre-camps meeting sometime the week of June 13.
??????????????
Okay, who will make the first afternoon?

Thanks Duke.....
Those who can volunteer please post the date you can be responsible for asap.
Location: Ocala National Forrest off Hwy 314 at the Hunter Ed Training Facility
Time of presentation: 4 to 5:30 pm on Thursdays
June 23
June 30
July 14
July 21
July 28
This is a great way to bring our young people into waterfowling. An outline of previous presentations by Duke and others will be made available as a guide if you wish. Duck IDs, Fl.'s unique mottle duck and the South American whistling ducks, migration routes of species in FL, decoys, calling, gun, wading and boat safety, blinds, lay out techniques for divers, etc are all good topics.

Newton,
Do we have any stickers or other UW stuff?
Duke
N. Cook
06-05-2005, 11:02 AM
Do we have an estimate of how many will attend.....20 or 30 per session?....would be nice to have some hand outs.
David has the stickers....but as to how many, he will have to repy. We have a few Duck ID books, but not enough and when I called to see about a new supply the printer gave a high cost....

I will be able to make all the dates. I will be happy to assist on the first couple of classes till I gain some confidence. And then can go solo if needed. I am not a public speaker and get very nervous in front of a crowd. I have 2 boats I can bring, a jon boat with a Beavertail and a one man duck dingy.
N. Cook
06-05-2005, 02:57 PM
Thanks Wilbur.....and you will do great....just list the topics you want to cover on a note pad and then act as if you are talking to your own kids.....and bringing the boat and gear will be extra special for everyone....better than any picture and gives the kids hands on experience. I hope to drive up for at least one session....and will wait and see if we have trouble having presenters on all dates before choosing...

OK. I posted up. The rest of ya'll can jump in any time! What age groups are going to be there? I am going to check to see if we can get some DU freebies also. Any other ideas are welcome.

Glad you're pitching in.
Maybe we could keep it a UW thing. Just my thoughts.

Nice to keep the emphasis on UW-F, but the DU duck ID poster would be a great handout if we could get enough....can we estimate the numbers? 100, 200?
Wilbur
06-08-2005, 04:34 PM
Duke,
Any speaking of organizations I will do will be about UW-F, with only a mention of DU and Delta. This is our "shin dig" and I wont forget who I am representing.

Phil and Joe....if ya'll will choose dates to pair up with Wilbur, I will pick one of the left overs and if any still do not have two people we can work on getting someone.
Duke, can you estimate the total number attending?

Delta Waterfowl-Florida started the youth hunts at Goodwin and we do not hide DU or UW during the hunt. In fact we promote them all!!!! Sounds a bit greedy to me Duke........ The future of waterfowling will rely on all three orgs to stand together. That is important education to our future waterfowlers.
I would be willing to come up for one of the dates......
Joe, Let me know what day you will be going. I would like to make a day also. We could truck pool. Anything for the kids............... :icon_salu

Fyre,
I am also a proud member of DU,(dont say anything to Rut) and dont mind mentioning them but I am doing this under UW-F. Our goals are different than DU's or Delta's and we are never in competition with either, and as always it's the duck hunter we have in mind. These youngsters are the future of duck hunting and they will get exposed to all of the organizations sooner or later. :icon_salu

I understand Wilbur. I'm not saying that a section be devoted to the other organizations. I just find it funny that you were gonna get DU freebies for the kids and that got shot down. What I'm saying is there's no harm in a DU Duck ID poster to give away to the kids at a UW event. UW has nothing like that and it is a great education tool for the youngsters. I think that was a bit to picky. We had DU freebies at our Youth Hunt. We had UW membershiops drives at our sporting clays shoot in Fellesmere. Again, omitting an educational tool cause it says DU is a bit to picky.

Aaron, Would love to have the help brother..What shift are you on LT ?
and I see no reason that DU duck ID posters cannot be handed out(if we can get them) This is a UW-F function...but... you should never cut off your nose to spite your face! The kids deserve the best seminar that we can provide. :)

Okay, okay...
Let me re-phrase it. UW started the Summer Youth Camp Duck Seminars alone. I think UW should be Top Billing. I would hate to UW get second fiddle when it was promoted and put on by UW.
D. Eggeman sent me over 200 "USFWS Ducks at a Distance" booklets, (which has ommited the Florida duck). DU's nor UW's name is on them. That's the only hand out I have, but if there is something more, why not? Do we have some UW stuff? If not we'll give 'em DU stickers.

Duke....those ID books are just the thing we need.....I am glad you have some and we should hit Diane up for more.....I have a few in the UW-F "box" and I investigated getting a new supply at the printing agency and was quoted almost $2 per book!!!! If the state gets them free or is willing to give them to us we need to get a few hundred more....they are great handouts at any event we have a booth at.
I am sure you can get them to Wilbur before the first seminar.

I agree with you Duke. That was my intent all along. I guess in our posts we left a few loopholes and things got taken out of context. Fyre, the meeting I was talking about is a pre-camp counselors meeting at the FWC camp in the Ocala National Foprest.

Gotcha........I will be unable to attend that. Wilbur, my comments were not directed at you. Sorry if I sounded harsh but its tough to determine what people mean half the time through text. I never intended for UW to get second fiddle. My argument was with educational material that UW could use. Thats all........ :booty: :icon_smil

Sorry about the late reply.

I will have a schedual for classes next week. and will mark all down that wants to help.
This is a great chance for UWF to stay in grace with FWC

Hats off for Phil! He has really been the backbone of the presentations. He is very knowledgeable and does well at putting it into words. Doing this is very rewarding and a pleasure. The kids are really enjoying this and I hope they take a firm interest in waterfowl hunting. Any who want to participate come on up, there is always room for more help.
