Took my sons and a couple of other boys from their Boy Scout Troop to the BSA Northern Tier Base Camp in Ely, Minnesota. We spent 5 nights paddling, portaging, fishing, and camping a 50 mile loop of the Boundry Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota and the Quetico Provinicial Park in Ontario. What a beautiful wilderness area and a great experience for the boys. Only ducks of note were a Hen Black with ducklings, a couple of Wood Ducks and quite a few Goldeneyes and Buffleheads. Also saw a Moose, Beavers, Loons and alot of Eagles. Caught Smallmouth, Largemouth, Rockbass, Lake Trout but could never connect with the elusive Walleye.

If anyone has sons in Boy Scouts this is the trip of a lifetime.

Here a a few of my favorite photos.

My sons each got 1 Black Fly bite. They are nasty little critters! Mosquitos weren't too bad. We could stay out after dark which was the opposite of what I had heard from prior years. Giant gnats were annoying. I found out about Permethrin before the trip, which is an insect repellant applied to clothing. It lasts a couple of weeks and I will definately be
using it before hunting season. Never had a bug land on my clothing.

High temperature was about 55, cloudy, drizzle, when we set off from base camp about 11:00 AM. Like a bad winter in S Fla I joked! After that it warmed to a high of 80, lows in the 50's. Great camping weather.

Another highlight was going to the Cabelas store in Rogers, MN. Nothing can compare.

North of the Canadian border is true wilderness. 50 mile distance between roads. No motors allowed so the only way in is canoe and portage. We did not see any other people for 2 days.
