I would really like to take a poll -

"What do you feel is the best way to streamline the permitting process for Goodwin, STA's etc.?"

As a group, if we can speak with one voice we will be heard more clearly.

Personally, I think its ludicrous to have any system where you have to dial the phone repeatedly for hours to get a permit - that's one of the dumbest methods I ever heard of! It's like my hunting is under the control of Ma Bell! Many days I have attempted to get a Goodwin permit by dialing for 3 hours only to get the bum's rush. What about the guy that has to work for a living? I gave up trying. They keep it - I'm getting a professional dialing system installed for next year. It'll come in handy for concert tickets too.

Arriving a day ahead of schedule isn't much better. My lack of a defined work schedule permits it, so I hunted ALOT at the STA's. Its not fair to others however.

First:
Hunting permits should be by lottery and preference points. It's the only fair way, otherwise it discriminates against those with 9 to 5 jobs, just like the current STA situation. Come to think of it, that's the way standby's should be - if you don't get in you get a pass for next week, or at least an added entry in the drawing.

Second:
If the unit will support 100 hunters, or a 600 duck harvest, one way or another let 100 hunters in at daybreak! Why have 25 standby slots in the first place?

Third:
Open the dam things more than one day per week! I can say that STA 5 should be open like Tu, Th, Sat and Sun. If management thinks that will interfere with their stuff, allow hunting only until 9 or 10 am weekdays. That'll take a lot of the pressure off, chase more ducks out to other areas, etc. Fact is, you really don't even need a check-in station, let FWCE patrol it. Ask Merritt Island!

Fourth:
Allow more than one permit per person per year. How about 5 per unit per year? If there are to be more units available, more days to hunt, more hunting by permit per day, why not?

Fifth:
Overbook the hunts. If there's a 10% no-show rate, add 10% to the permits issued. Furthermore, the permits should be transferrable, just like Dupris and many of the other WMA's. If one of can't make it, post your intended absence here (we could explain it in our letter) and we could rotate members thru!

Not a member? JOIN!!!

Thanks for letting me get that out ... I would like to hear what you think!

well the none transferable makes it so where one guy with a ton of money to spend on hunting doesnt buy up all the chances like the lottery of quota system we have in place for management area quota hunts you buy one management stamp someone buys everybody he knows one and then transfers the quotas this eliminates that. I agree callins are hard but i think the system the stas use now with permits and qallowing walkins is the best. maybe if there was a number you could call and canceel your permit than your idea about walkins might work carry over to the next week might be an idea but who would be handling the paper work. the next guy might not be as congenial as Billy. but i agree with trying to find a solution with the walk on problems even though the way it was we walked on eash of the three mornings we were there without a permit we had two afternoon permits and the third time walked in for a morning late and stayed and walked in that afternoon . i really enjoyed the afternoon hunts and would not like to see them done away with.

Randy's reference is to the guy who buys 10 WMA permits for everyone in his family at $25 a pop ($250) then submits for 20 special and regular quota permits, gets eight or 10 really nice hunts (instead of just the two (max) allotted for his own WMA permit) and keeps them all.
If STA permits were transferable, I'd have my mother, grandmother, sister, wife, neighbor, etc. put in for them so that I had a permit for every STA 5 and STA 1 hunt for every weekend of the season. That's if every other duck hunter didn't beat me to it.
I thought this year's STA system was much better than the call-in system. I got through once in two years for STA 5. There are other issues with the permits and walk-ins that are best addressed in the private forum.
