THis is a letter I sent to the great people that introduced me to Tank. my CBR.
Chesepeak Bay Reteiver Recue and Tri County Animal Shelter

I just have to thank you again for getting me with Tank.. HE"S great.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would come this far. It makes me realize there is always HOPE.

I had two professional trainers tell me to not waste my time or food on him. To get another dog that would be ready to hunt. But I told them like I told you if he didn't hunt I would keep him as a pet.

Saturday was the opening weekend of the Waterfowl Season. I didn't take him Sat. because of the high water and Alligators . But I found a place that I scouted weeks ago, that was only knee deep and I prepped it to hunt on Sunday. I spent six hours Clearing the grass to make a clearing so the Ducks could see me decoys.

I took Tank on Sunday morning before sun rise. Instincts are awesome it's like he knew what we were going to do.
A Blue wing teal landed in my spread before legal shooting time so I left him there. Tank Sat by my side waiting for the fun and the real purpose of his life to begin. I heard the first volley of shots start from other hunters not far away and the Teal exploded into the sky I made my shot and he dropped into the water . Tank dashed out but was a little confused. He isn't familiar with Decoys yet so he went to the decoys . I went with him not certain there might be a Gator out there. And guided him in the direction of his downed bird. But not showing him where it was. He noticed it twitch and went straight for it and so started his hunting career. I shot my limit of six Ducks five Blue wing Teals and one Shoveler. Tank retrieved all of them. I worked with Tank the next hour simulating a shot with the Downed Shoveler. He Improved my the minute.
I took him out to dry land to warm up and go for a walk over the levee to see what the hunters on the refuge were doing . I met two hunters that were looking for a place to hunt so I invited them to my spot on the condition I could go with Tank and watch . They had an older Lab with them.
We all went to my blind and sat waiting for the next Duck to come in. A Ringneck drake flew in and the guy next to me dropped it . Tank was ready to go but I told him to stay, plus I had him on a leash. The Lab went out and looked and looked . But could't find the downed Duck. Tank was raring to go because he knew were it was. The Labs owner asked me to let Tank go. So I released his leash told him to stay. Then said "Tank" his release command and off he went. straight to the downed Duck and retrieved it to the shooter. not me. Boy was I proud of him.
Thanks again

Yes, they are very Protective of thier family.Plus one **** of of a Hunting dog. All dogs need to be socialized and must have a Alpha pack leader.
I've had and trained dogs all my life. This one ,is one of those once in a life time dogs.
If you are interested in a Chessie or any retreiver.. YOu should read 'Retreivers From The Inside Out' by Butch Goodwin. Before getting one
Tank was a big puppy on death row in N. Carolina last Dec. I drove 18 hrs up and 22hrs Back to save him. I never thought he'd be hunting this season.
I Worked with him every day and he has come around very nicely.
Not very many Chessies down here. I'm sure he'd love to meet you all.:duckie:
Hope you all have safe hunts and a Happy Thanks giving.

Capt.

YOur story might not be understood by the non-hunting community, but those of us who have watched dogs work and have owned dogs can surely relate to your heart warmed happiness. To know that you took a chance on an animal that you didn't know and put your faith in, says a lot about you.
Thank you for telling "Tanks" story.
I closed my eyes and watched his show over and over again.

May you have many great seasons together.
