Part-time officer accidentally shoots himself in foot in Indian River Shores

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 26-year veteran of the Indian River Shores Public Safety Department is recovering from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Part-time Officer Joe Richter (duckmanjr) shot himself in the lower leg at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday during a training session at the Indian River County Public Shooting Range, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.
Richter was in fair condition late Tuesday afternoon at Holmes Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.
Richter was holstering his weapon when the gun fired, said Deputy Jeff Luther, sheriff's spokesman.
"They were able to treat him right away," Luther said.
Richter retired last year as a sergeant with the department and returned this year on part-time status, said Indian River Shores Chief Bill Schauman.
"I'm told he was in good spirits," Schauman said while en route to Holmes on Tuesday.
The range is closed to the public Tuesdays to allow local law enforcement to train there, Luther said. Deputies were training with officers from Indian River Shores.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
