Last night my 17 yo son tells me he doesn't have to be at school until 11;30 today due to final exams. He says he wanted to know if he could go squirrel hunting. I told him heck no lets go shoot some ducks. He was cool with that we were going to get to hunt together cause our schedules have been full.
We slept in until 5 and drove down to a local marsh with a couple potholes within walking range. Usually we only shoot a mottle each. Well we put out 3 decoys and settled in some brush. The **** dog was being a pain in the butt cause he has only been quail huntin lately. After a few minutes the dog finally gets in a settled groove. My son says glad we got the dog now so I don't have to fetch em. Just after legal a pair of mottles sails in his side and he drops one 30 yds out stone dead. The other bird didn't offer me a safe angle so I passed. Man he had a big smile. I told him send cappy and he made a perfect retrieve to my sons hand.
A few moments later here comes 3 mottles. I drop one 20 yards out but still really alive. My son sends cappy right away and I yell no bird to stop him but the duck flew straight away with cappy at a bad angle for a finishng shot. (Valuable future lesson learned)My son starts busting my chops cause hes got his of course. A couple minutes later another pair settle into the decoys. We flush them and I drop one dead and cappy makes a text book retieve. Nice morning with my son and cappy in the marsh.
