View Full Version : Small Game - Load size?
If you could have only ONE choice for loads to do general Small Game hunting - from Rabbits/squirrills to Grouse/Dove in 12 ga.
What would it be?

Well ... it's tricky. I like #6 for rabbits & squirrels ... and #7.5 for dove ... usually use 7.5 or 8 for snipe.
If I have to pick ONE size ... it would be #7 ... although they are hard to find. ;)

I like #9 for quail birds and have taken many a hare with that shot. It is hard to knock down tree rats from atop a tall hardwood with 9's though.

I was going to say whatever is the cheapest but since the cheapest shells I ever bought were 3.5" BBB for .30 (yes that is cents) I will go with whatever is SECOND cheapest.
All kidding aside I would go with 6 or 7.5 depending on which your gun shoots best.

You would have very bad luck with anything smaller than # 6 s when hunting squirrel where fox squirrels predominate....that is where I grew up in W. Tenn. Ark and Miss. Other than that, the 7 and 71/2s are ok for birds and rabbits.....speaking of lead shot only.
I actually shot 5's when squirrel hunting in the White River Refuge as they were often older and tougher. Too many cripples with anything lighter. When the leaves went off later in the season a 22 was better, but even then a poor shot was a lost squirrel in a hole in the tree.
