View Full Version : STA1 first trip
I am hunting this site this Sunday, thinking of using my Johnboat without the motor. Push polling and or paddling to nearest cover. Would a canoe be better? In the UW-F forum picture posted it really looks open. Are there any heads you can get into? Does anyone ever dare take their dog? Does everyone waded hunt only.

I wouldn't take my dog to either. But certainly not 1W. You can take your jon but keep in mind that you cannot use a trailer so it must fit in yout truck. You can put in near the check station or near the parking area. The best bet is to have some wheels so that you can pull it down the levee and cut down on the paddle or pole distance.
There is plenty of cover on 5 but almost none on 1W. My buddy and I shot a limit in about an hour on 1W by him laying in his final attack and me laying in my kayak. The birds did not flair until we pulled up to shoot. Some guys just stand out in knee deep water near the decoys and get plenty of shooting with no cover at all.

I would use the canoe. From what I am told the water dropped a couple of inches. When we went we used a jon boat and hit bottom alot, we also saw people having to get out of their canoes to walk them across areas. Bring your chest waders only because there are areas that have waist deep water and a fewover the head so be careful. If you have a wheel dolly so you can walk down the berm to where you want to hunt and put in there.
