I live in Lakeland and would like to hunt Merritt Island NWR. Any suggestions or advice on places to camp near by and areas to try.

Holy cow Duck hunters are more tight lipped than Bass on a cold front.
I didnt want to sit in your spot. I just wanted some guidance so I didnt sit in your spot.

As far as a place to stay..There is a KOA that has" kampin' cabins" and it is off SR 46 which puts you between both entrances to MINWR. As far as spots....unless you call in and get a spot on area 1 or 4 you will have to hunt area 2 or area 3(if you have a boat)

SS..Plan on scouting alot since Merritt took a hit with the 'canes. Area two is your best bet access wise with a small boat/canoe till after the first of the year.

I'd check out Blackpoint if I were you. It always is holding birds!!! :D
Seriously though, without a permit for the impoundments you are stuck with the the open areas or the river, and both require lots of scouting. Good luck.

Rut and I know them greenheads are around, even if we got to get them next to the marina.:D

As for MI, spend some time w/ maps and scouting. Then you'll be more in the know. There are still some fellows that have been gunning it 50 years and they are kinda quite. Careful not to set too close, and keep your quacker in your pocket.

Use light coloured decoys and plenty of 'em.

You can use 'em if you want to shoot Chet's delight.

Jason, forget about Puzzle. I drive by the St. Johns at 46 every day. It is still in the flood stage, and is just now starting to recede, very slowly. I'd wait until a little closer to the season to scout there. The St. Johns is just one giant lake right now. :(

I went by the St Johns over the weekend at Astor and there was still some serious water. It was up to the tops of some of the docks still. Had a little flooded pond about 40 yards from my stand in some oaks on Saturday. Woodies started flying just after daylight and a mess of em dropped in and put on quite a show for me.
