As of Monday, portions of the Kiss. PUA and Hickory Hammock WMA were treated for Hyacinths and water lettuce. The treatment was accomplished by a contractor and WMD staff utilizing a helicopter. Treatment areas were pockets that could not be reached by normal means of spraying, ie. boats or walking in.
"Reward" was used for the treaments.
It is nice to see an on going treatment program working. Without the contiuned treatments of invasives, the natural marshes would be choked out and the habitat degraded greatly.

I understand the need to rid the waters of lettuce and hyacinth. My problem lies when these plants are mixed within smartweed or other natural vegetation. Some of the lakes on the USJ's used to have a ton of SW. Now there is no not at all emergent vegetation. When they treat for other things eventually it will kill off a major portion of the plants we want in our waters. The USJ is a perfect picture of what the vast majority of our lakes and creeks will become before this practice gets changed. STOP killing our natural vegetation please.

Keith if you can't beat 'em join 'em should be the motto. All this kingdom grew from we need to get rid of some of the hyacinth's in the late 70's in okeechobee. Look at what a monster it has grown into.
