Background:
The Taylor Creek / Nubbin Slough Projects are Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) 1996 Critical Restoration Projects. The projects will provide improved health for Lake Okeechobee, through improved water quality and attenuating lake levels by holding more water on the landscape north of the lake.

The projects include the construction of stormwater treatment areas (STAs) on two of the main tributaries to Lake Okeechobee, Nubbin Slough and Taylor Creek. Construction of a 780-acre STA for Nubbin Slough is planned on the former New Palm/Newcomer Dairy, which is now in public ownership. The purpose of this STA is to divert and treat the majority of water in Nubbin Slough.

Construction of a 190-acre STA for Taylor Creek is planned in a publicly held portion of Grassy Island Ranch, east of Taylor Creek. The purpose of this STA is to divert and treat about 10 percent of the water flow from Taylor Creek.

These projects are components of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). The CERP will restore the Everglades through a series of civil engineering and environmental projects and improvements.

There are also several STA's and reservoirs planned for Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River county as a part of the Indian river lagoon portion of CERP. Funding will be before the US congress later this summer for those projects.
