The plans for the Southern Golden Gate Estates (Picayune Strand) Hydrologic Restoration Project will remove the infrastructure of a 55,247 acre planned subdivision and restore its pre-drainage hydrology and ecology. One of the goals of the project is to restore more natural sheet flow, resulting in improved water deliveries to coastal estuaries. The project is located between Alligator Alley (I-75) and Tamiami Trail (US Hwy. 41), west of Fakahatchee Strand Preserve, and east of Belle Meade State Conservation area.

The project is one component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). CERP will restore the Everglades through a series of civil engineering and environmental projects and improvements.
