I am having trouble with my GD Briggs and Strattion Vanguard 9 HP.

No, not that it putts along slower than Christmas ---
it cuts off when I lower the foot to go. I had it laid up all season (with Stabil) and I tested it 3-4 times to keep it running, but of course I never lowered the motor in those drydock tests.

I sprayed the carb throat out real good with carb cleaner last night but that didnt do the trick.

Ideas?:dontknow:

Check the oil.
For some odd reason it may have an oil level sensor.
Engines are sent out by the manufacturer with different options. Sometimes the single cylinder Briggs were sent out with the level sensor.

Bad mercury switch?

Nah that only stops voltage to the starter solenoid.

Still check for an oil level sensor it may be bad if it has one.
If not the next thing that comes to mind is a saturated float.

Does it shut off when you tip the motor down outside of water (i.e. on the trailer) or is it the load on the prop that is killing the motor?

I have the same motor. It happened to me when I first ran it. It would backfire and shut off. Check the oil with the motor in the angle you are going to run it. That solved my problem.

Fins n Wings, I think you are spot on and Whistlingwings was also correct.

I emailed GoDevil per Jpg2esq's suggestion and the low-oil cutoff switch is their diagnosis.

I will check this when I get home.

Turns out to be the low oil cutoff. Checked oil with motor in run position (down) and it needed some more.

I was checking oil level with the motor literally level so it looked full to me. Ready to go now.
