Vistar Realty, Hog Point @ Crystal Lakes has asked the USACE for permission to backfill approx (1) one acre of waterfowl habitat in the Hog Point Mosquito Impoundment.

http://www.saj.usace.army.mil/permit/public_notices/public_notices/saj-2004-1724.pdf

I have already spoken to Steve Brooker (321) 453-7655 (USACE)about this project & how it will impact nesting Mottled Ducks & wintering waterfowl, & spawning fish.

He has not personally inspected the project yet & I have requested to be there when he does.

As waterfowl hunters & fishermen, I strongly recommend that you take the time, look over the file, & make your comments against this project to Steve Brooker with USACE.

The (50) fifty acre area that the Vistar say they will preserve cannot be built on anyway, so were is the benifit.

(1) One acre doesn't sound like alot but it's an acre lost for the fish & waterfowl.

PLEAST TAKE A FEW MINUTES & LET STEVE KNOW VIA E-MAIL BY MAY 26, 2004 THAT YOU OPPOSE THIS PROJECT.

stephen.brooker@saj02.usace.army.mil

I will be contact Craig LaSchak with Ducks Uunlimited, along with Jeff Allen from Delta Waterfowl & Newton Cook from United Waterfowlers-Florida.

If someone would forward this to the CCA it would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin Halls letter was so good I just changed it around some and added a few touches.... Send this guy an e-mail NOW!!!

Dear Mr. Brooker,

First, Let me state that as a member of United Waterfowlers - Florida inc. I am strongly opposed to this permit being approved. The salt marsh ecosystem is a very important nesting area for Florida Mottled Ducks & very important to wintering waterfowl. Since this impoundment has been reconnected with the Indian River, it is also very important as a nursery area for fish. Alot of taxpayer funds have been spent to reconnect these impoundments to the Indian River.

As a hunter, a fisherman, and a conservationist, we must do all that we can to protect all of our natural areas that remain. The state of Florida has already lost far too much land to development. We in this state are at a crossroads, If we do not protect what remains all generations to follow will pay for our deeds.

Truly, it is a battle to keep florida in a natural and unspoiled state. While this may seem like "only an acre" it is representative of what is happening every day all over the sunshine state...we are losing it "only one acre" at a time. Please see to it that the people win this little battle so that over time we may win the war.

Thank you.

Joseph A Richter Sr.

Kev...Your letter IS my letter...I just changed it some so that it didn't look like a form letter bombardment. Anybody else feel free to pirate mine and throw your own personal spin on it...:)

I suggest this thread be moved to the Public forum....and a similar thread with the letters started on the SDH and Refuge sites. The issue is broader than just our members. Thanks to Capt Jeff, Joe, Kevin and the others for putting some heat out.
