There are two very important scoping meetings coming up on the DECOMP project.

August 21, 2007
6:00PM Open House, 6:30-8:30 PM Presentations and Public Comment
South Florida Water Management District
3301 Gun Club Road
West Palm Beach, FL 33406

August 23, 2007
6:00PM Open House, 6:30-8:30 PM Presentations and Public Comment
Southwest Regional Library
16835 Sheridan Street
Pembroke Pines, FL 33331

THESE ARE TURN OUT MEETINGS

Are you worried what will happen to Holiday Park? It won't matter if they fill the L-67. It will be the ramp to no where.

It is critical that we show the Corp that the citizens of South Florida (50% partners in the cost of this project) DO NOT support filling the L-67.

David, can you provide some more insight on the "filling of L67?" Is this something that is proposed? If so, why is it being proposed? This is the 1st that I've heard of it.

David you can count on me being at the Pembroke Pines meeting. I will no doubt be bringing many with me. I am going to try to speak with Tony Sanso to see if he can organize support for the meeting at SFWMD Headquarters. I have no doubt in my mind that this will draw a crowd. Wait till we post it on Florida Sportsman and Southern Airboat!

DECOMP stands for decompartmentalism of the Water Conservation areas (WCA's). This is all part of Everglades Restoration CERP and the desire to restore sheet flow.

We contend that there is no reason to fill the canals like the L67A or L67C but rather the LEVEE next to the canal should be degraded and turned into an artificial tree island and the canal left alone. The levee not the canal is the impediment to sheet flow. Filling the canals will cut off access to hundreds of square miles of the everglades to recreation.

The canals also provide deep water refuge for the fish and gators during dry times. The levees provide refuge for the deer and other mammals during high water. Pushing the levees into the canals will be a disaster for wildlife.

Very disappointing turnout in WPB. I hope our southern brothers pick up our slack.

I've got several comments on the PIR floating around in my head. I'll try and put it all together tomorrow and post up some ideas for members attending the 8/23 mtg.

Myself and Ross went to the meeting in pembroke pines. The turn out was horrible. At the most 25 people.

IMHO, they still seem to be very open to all ideas and suggestions so we need to flood them with calls/e-mails to make sure our resource is protected.

Thanks Billy. Let us know when you need additional suggestions fired to them. Are they to be sent to our commissioners? Anyone else?
