Looks like I am going to be heading south to you fellas' neck of the woods soon. I was just curious as to what to expect as far as duck hunting in the Port Orange/Daytona area? I hear you shoot alot of ringers, woodies, and teal. Since these are three of my favorite birds, I am already excited.

Ringnecker, Port Orange is in southern Volusia county, which is just above Brevard county. This puts you in close proximity to some good duck hunting. You will be within striking distance of the St. John's river, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and various other lakes and rivers in the area, as well as a few WMA's that you can duck hunt on.

If you are coming to FL and obviously already know of this site, we would welcome you as a member of UW-F.....just click on the appropriate bullets on this site to check UW-F out and to join. Great way to meet the guys you will be sharing the marshes with.

You will have some mornings in the 30s, but just as many in the 60s. You will never break ice. The days will be sunny more often than not.........and there will be days when you may need mosquito repellent....but the insulated underwear will be needed just often enough to remind you a little of the northern hunting. Soon you will wonder how you could stand the really cold hunting conditions....you will surely be spoiled.

And some days those mosquitos look as big as ducks.............

Well, I will be moving from eastern NC to Fla., so I expected a pretty big change. Not breaking ice will be great, but I will miss the chill in the air.
Are the gators a nuissance?

They generally aren't a problem. You might not be able to find a downed bird once in awhile because of them. I was hunting with a guy that tripped over one once. The gator went one way and he went the other. Both were moving pretty fast..........

One fellow from the panhandle posted once on another site that a gator grabbed him in waist deepwater and he suffered a punctured lung before his buddy could beat the lizzard off....but that is the only attack on a duck hunter I have ever heard....but gators will eat your dog with gusto all over FL.

Thanks for all the replies. You have been very helpful and reassuring. Once I get to Port Orange, I will be sure to look UWFL up.
Maybe we will meet in the marsh one morning.
