Sorry Billy, I couldn't hold it in any longer!
The 2nd Annual UW-F Mudfest will be held Sunday, April 15th at Everglades Holiday Park in Broward County. This family event will consist of a poker run, barbeque, mini-fishing tournament, and good muddy fun!
The current schedule is:
10:00 - 10:30 Arrive at Holiday Park. Gather around the back ramps.
10:30 - 12:30 Poker Run
12:30 - 2:30 Lunch & hang out
2:30 - 4:30 Mini Fishing tourney
5:00 Wrap up
The poker run will have 7 stops. At each stop, a card will be drawn at random and the final 5 card hand determines the winner. Speed will not be a factor, as long as you finish the course ;) At least 5 stops will be outboard accessible, so you won't need a mud motor to compete. The proposed route is pictured at the bottom of this page. The red line indicates the mud motor course, the white line indicates the outboard course (sorry it's so straight). There are 5 stops in the marsh plus one at the start line and one at the finish line.
Much of the food and cooking duty has been donated by a growing list of gracious South Florida member hosts including Captmako, ChiefBubba and the 8th st gang. Food will be available for a small donation, and the event is B(lotsa)YOB.
Fishing tournament details TBD.
Mud motor dealers will be at the event to demonstrate new products and give you a chance to take a ride and see why "If you don't have one, you need one".
As UW-F always advocates leaving the marsh cleaner than we found it, Ron Smith has offered a hand-carved decoy as a prize for the boat which retrieves the most trash from the marsh.
Everglades Holiday Park is located just off of US-27 just south of I-75. For more information on Holiday Park, visit the park's website here (http://www.evergladesholidaypark.com).
UW-F is working on arranging a group rate for the event at a nearby hotel and the park offers tent campsites.
T-shirts will be available for the event. The design is still in the works, but I'm sure it will rock. You will soon be able to book the shirts in the UW-F Web Store (see left menu on website). Payment must be received by March 15th. Procedes will benefit future youth hunts.
Of course, Newton and other UW-F reps will be there if you want to join the organization or renew your membership.
A final note: Regulations for the WMA in which the event will be held state that:
"No vessel shall be operated outside of Water Management District canals unless it is equipped with an orange flag at least 10 inches wide and 12 inches long and displayed at a minimum height of 10 feet above the bottom of the vessel."
These flags are available for purchase from the gift shop for $10, but who know's how many they have, and they don't include a 10ft pole. Would be best to get one ahead of time. Ace hardware for about $6, a torn orange rainjacket, and material from a fabric shop have also been suggested as flag sources. Pole suggestions range from pvc to fiberglass antennas to trim lumber. Just make sure that it is orange, meets the size requirements and is 10' up.
See you there!
