The hunt is open to "all youths."

It's kind of a honor system is regards to the "mentoring hunts."

What we are trying to do is get our future duck hunters & their parents out into the blind.

What we don't want to do is give "free charters" to folks who have the "means & expirience" to get out there themselves & leave a first time hunters to fend for themselves.

Does that kinda answer your question.

Mentoring duck hunts offered for youth

By Bill Sargent
FLORIDA TODAY

PALM BAY -- Jeff Kraynik was an 11 year old growing up in northern Ohio when a neighbor took him rabbit hunting for the first time.

"From that moment, I was hooked on the whole outdoors thing," said Kraynik, 39, now an avid sportsman. "I remember that rabbit hunt like it was yesterday."

It will be payback time for Kraynik on Saturday when he and 11 other waterfowl hunting guides take children and their parents on their first duck hunting trips.

The free mentoring hunts will be offered at the T.M. Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area south of Palm Bay as part of the statewide Youth Waterfowl Days sponsored by the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Members of Brevard County Ducks Unlimited chapters and Delta Waterfowl will assist.

Under the rules of the two days set aside each year for youth-only duck hunting, each child must be 15 years old or younger, and must be accompanied by an adult who does not hunt. Youth hunting will continue Sunday statewide, but not at the Goodwin area.

Kraynik, owner of Coastal Sportsmen of Florida, a hunting and fishing guide service based in Palm Bay, said the guides will provide boats, gear and decoys. Shotguns, ammo and camouflage will be the responsibility of the accompanying adults.

Coastal Sportsmen will host a cookout lunch starting at 11 a.m. following the hunt.

While the mentoring hunts will be reserved for first-time hunters, dozens of other young hunters and adults will be using the Goodwin area, which includes the adjoining Broadmoor Marsh Unit.

No more than 64 children will be allowed in the Goodwin area, a series of small marshy impoundments, and 56 will be the limit for the Broadmoor area, which features marsh and an open impoundment. Each party, consisting of no more than four young hunters, will be assigned a hunting area.

Children 15 and younger accompanied by an adult are not required to have a state hunting license.

Kraynik said the hunts are designed to educate the parents as much as the children.

"It gives the parents an idea of what they need to do," Kraynik said. "Our purpose is to get the kids away from the TV sets and computers and expose them to the outdoors. It's our future. It sounds corny, but it's true," Kraynik added.

Reservations are necessary for the mentoring hunts and are available by calling the Goodwin office at (321) 726-2862. Kraynik can be reached at 725-3456.

CJ,

Glad to see the coverage and commitment to the sport.

I'm sure all the kids will remember the hunt and will cherish the memory just as you do.

Good luck to all young hunters!
