I attended the part of the meeting with topics of interest to us. The STA construction projects are all ahead of schedule...all STAs have some sort of construction going on, and will have into the foreseeable future. Looking forward, STA 5 should be ok for next season, STA 3/4 will be ok, the construction on STA 2 will be moving north and south of where it is now and may open access from Rt. 27. The lady responsible for the STAs says she is in support of the hunting program (a change from two years ago when "neutral" was about all I could get). She continues to see problems with access off Rt. 27 to STA 2, but even brought up the "alternate route" without me having to mention it!!!!

I spoke with Chip Merriam, Asst. Ext. Director, and he said the rice seemed to have helped the cell at STA 1 W and things were progressing well. He said they may try the rice again and in other places....Chip said that barring any suprises STA 1 W would be back up for next season...they need it back on line asap.

The report on Lake O by Dr. Gray also was encouraging. The rain today was particulary helpful as it solves some of the drought restrictions and water flows needed to the estuaries that were being taken "off the shelf". The lake itself is slowing revegetating and clearing, however, wave action is always a set back, especially with contamination by phosporous in the suspended particles.

All in all, the SFWMD news is good for duckhunters.
