Governor Jeb Bush recently appointed Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Chairman Rodney Barreto to serve five more years on the Commission.

Barreto, is a Miami-based businessman who began his first term on the FWC in 2001 and is now serving his second term as chairman.

“Florida’s conservation efforts have to be the very best in the world,” said Barreto. “We are a model for other states to follow in fish, wildlife and natural resource management.”

Barreto added that wildlife resource management is a science with many complexities.
“Everything we do to affect one species affects many others,” he said. “Conservation is always evolving, because everything changes constantly – sometimes naturally and sometimes because of man-made factors.”

Barreto plans to place special emphasis on supporting Florida’s Wildlife Legacy Initiative as he begins his second term. The Initiative is FWC’s long-term commitment to conserve all native wildlife and the places they live. It takes a big-picture approach to conservation and seeks to build partnerships with concerned groups and individuals. In addition, it has a grant-funding component to help the FWC and its partners reach conservation goals.

“The economic impact of this initiative is enormous, considering Florida’s natural resources attract 76.8 million visitors with an annual $457 billion impact on the state’s economy,” Barreto said.

Barreto is active in numerous civic and business organizations. He is currently the chairman of the South Florida Super Bowl 41 Host Committee, and a trustee or board member for Goodwill Industries of South Florida, Baptist Health System, and US Century Bank.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in professional studies from Barry University in Miami. He lives in Miami and Key Largo with his wife Shelia.

That's good news. He in my opinion is one of the best commissioners we have.
