We just got back Sunday from nearly two weeks in Ohio. Unfortunately we were there during the split in their waterfowl season so we were limited to deer hunting. We did see several flocks of honkers which was cool.

Deer hunting was kinda slow. Saw 12 doe and 1 buck on monday then didn't see anything on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon I decided we better take a doe or possibly come home without any meat. My brother-in-law drove me out a nice 175lb doe which I took at 72 yards on a dead run with the muzzleloader. We weren't able to fill Davey's tag. The cold was all the young Florida native could handle. One morning I saw him get out of his stand about 15 minutes after legal time and head back to the jeep:D

The part of the trip that made it all worth it was the absolute MONSTER buck that we saw. This bad boy was easily 300lbs and had a rack that any whitetail hunter would die for. I'd say he was a 12 but probably had some smaller scorable points. The rack was every bit of 24" high and 24" wide. We spotted him sitting at the end of a lane 130yards back from the road. He had a clear view of the entire valley and was one smart old dude. My brother-in-law and the land owner tried to sneak down the ditch bank along the road and get a shot at him. The land owner was a "dunkard" (German Baptists I think, Kinda like the Almish) He didn't allow any gun hunting on his land but he wanted that buck. He used one of our scoped shotguns but missed the shot. My son and I were setup behind the buck on one of two possible escape routes. As fate would have it, he took the other route. I had the scope on him the whole way across a large field but he was a good 400 yards away. The trip was worth it just to have a beautiful creature like that in my scope.

The lastest word is that no one got him. I'll be back next year to try for him or one of his boys:D

Out of the 1 square mile area that we hunted there were several nice wall hangers taken. That dude was probably the daddy to most of them. My borther-in-law shot a nice 258lb 10-point with a 22" spread in bow season out of the same area.

Now it's time to kill some ducks. Anybody doing any good?

Converted....will give you a call.....we hunted in Pike county at my cabin. Went up Thanksgiving nite....18 hours straight throug with Mike and Corey. SEt up the cabin on fri.....my buddy across the street that watches my place had a nice fire in the stove. Scouted Sat and sun....a little squirrel hunting as well.....fed 10 people at the usual Sat. BBQ, seven slept in the cabin.....Sunday was the steak cookout, fed 14.....the neighbors come....a little snow on the ground Sat am and it was in the 20s all week, burned a cord of wooD! Monday am we scatter about on the hillside above the cabin.....Mike got a nice 8 point and a friend a nice doe....hard winds on Tues really hurt and we left a little early Weds am to miss the coming storm. We saw a lot of deer, all within 300 yards of the cabin....in fact the neighbor saw two bucks go across my yard Tues am.....should have stayed in the out house in stead of climbing the hill!!! Just did'nt have a lot of luck getting the deer inside of 50 yards this year, but there sure should be a large herd next year......still over a hundred pounds of meat to put up is plenty for our group.
