I was just on a tour with SFWMD and FWC folks today marking out parking and access areas to three of the several properties the District will be opening to the public this season for small game hunting. The plan is to have them open for the October dove period.
UW-F has been lobbying the District to inventory their lands looking for those that have been purchased for projects not to be started for several years and open appropriate ones to public use....in our case small game hunting...until construction begins.
Thanks to Fred Davis, Dan Cotter and BJ Kattel this is being done and these properties are a test of the program. The FWC is helping, Dr. Jen Williams was with us taking notes for the Brochures. There are other areas in the south near Miami and these particular areas are just south of Rt. 70 about 10 miles west of the turnpike.
These properties are abandoned (and overgrown) orange groves and tough hunting....but lets get them open and then we can look at requesting mowing and discing of some areas to improve habitat....in fact there are probably volunteer groups who do this for the District on hunting areas who could be enticed to do it here???
I did see several dove on each place and one has a small wetland area.
Watch for more info and we will post when the FWC brochures are ready.
