Well I know we have some longtail guys on here and they have been waiting to hear something on these. Mud Buddy has come up with the new SLY model (Super Long Tail) He has developed this motor over 2 years now and has finaly built five of them of which he has sold 3 already! DANG IT!! I wanted one. They seem pretty nice and are pretty reasonable. The asking price ifhe sticks with it is going to be $4195 he will eventually have it for all motors but right nowhe has only developed the 35. Here is Glenn's official release. I don't normally spam you guys with this stuff but thought you would want to know about it. Here is his direct quote

"So, as you can tell, I am very pleased with the SLT and we will put it into production for July.

We initiated the patent(s) documentation last Wednesday in that this design is worth protecting.

The cost will be $100 less than the current 35 longtail. We will begin distribution in early July, and begin taking orders May 15th.

The SLT drive will come with a 35 Vanguard, however it is available with a 35CDI or Black Death 4500.

Most likely I will go to a stainless frame within a week. Plus I didn't mention but the drive assembly will be bolted on making a short transom frame easy to convert to a tall transom, etc.

In summary, the Super Longtail is here to stay and will in short time command its spot in Mud Buddy's lineup this year at roughly $100 less or more than our or competitor's longtails.

And, finally, I must extend a thanks to the staff and engineers at ARKMOS, here in Salt Lake for helping me design the new Super Longtail (SLT). This is only the beginning for our new R&D team at ARKMOS and our customers will see much more to come this year. For those of you that have not heard of ARKMOS, it is a new company consisting of engineers, designers, marketing, advertising, sales, manufacturing, and business consultants that we formed last year to launch a new line of outdoor products the next few years. Mud Buddy and other companies will distribute their products."

So what is the advantage of the SLT over a regular motor? Would adding the belt drive not just be another point of possible failure? That was always the attraction of a traditional longtail. They were dependable, direct drive, and simple design.

Are these geared differently? Is there a speed increase over a traditional unit of the same hp?

Well the biggest problem with the longtails of the past were the fact it was a 1 to 1 gear ratio so there was very little power delivered to the prop. With the addition to the gear ration and the belt drive it provides more torque to the prop. As far as more parts yes there are more parts but they are dependable as the longtail of old. The addition of the clutch and the belt drive make them nice you now have a neutral on a longtail, you are running a lot faster that the older long tails. In his announcement one of his statements was he was only 4 to 5 mph off the stock 35 Hyper drive so yes speeds have greatly increased the other was he is saying they are not a bear to operate as they once were. I have not test driven one of these so I can honestly say I don't know but from the initial tests and running of the new motor he likes is performance thus far. As far as dependablility of the added parts the belt is probably the most dependable and the clutch is second on the list. Most of the time when those parts break it is because the failur of another part. If anything he has made it stronger and more dependable, one example he is using the same drive system as the surface drives so better bearings better out drvie you use the hex shaft instead of the threaded believe me from intitial looks it is a lot better even though there are more working parts to it. He has simplified the acces and ability to fix these things as well.

Are they lighter than the hyper drives too?

FastDuck, the season, alas, is over...I know you will report on the SLT as soon as you have one and have tested it. I will be focused on spring turkey for the next three months, but always looking forward to the next duck season and better running on my duck boat. All the best, Raul.

I'd also like to alert LT owners and prospective new owners out there, that a company called Backwater is producing a line of longtail motors with an improved cavitation plate design and thus far field reports are favorable. The current trend is the shorty, but the LT is still a viable tool down here, IMO, and the marketplace gives us choices.:coffee2::coffee2:
