The meeting today was dominated by the manatee issue....fun to watch the antics, yellow banners, stomping on a symbolic manatee....when the speaker did that the people up front all ducked....a just before the vote emergency alarm sending all into the parking lot....(the hotel said it was a false alarm from the kitchen). All just to change the status from endangered to threatened.
Obviously, with several more thousand manatees reported by the biologists, the Commissioners bravely passed the new rule.

Then, just as often happens, in the fine print I see "PROPOSED SAFE HAVENS". And what is listed? Big Mud and Little Mud Creeks in St. Lucie Ct.

Now Big Mud is already off limits next to the atomic power station, but Little Mud Creek runs to a bridge where there is an unimproved boat ramp many use to access the Indian River. It is the only ramp on the east bank between the two causeways.

I did a quick "off the floor" conference with Nick Wiley, FWC Director of Hunting, and he came back with assurances "staff" did not support a "change at this time", Just to be sure, I was able to speak to the Commission during Public Comments and put on record our strong opposition to any change.

The area now is Slow No Wake, the possible SAFE HAVEN rules could run to NO MOTORS or even a ban on access.

The meeting today has a presentation by Nick Wiley on the FUTURE OF HUNTING IN FL. I will be speaking following him in support of the program and outline the many groups such as UW-F who are on the commitee.

DUCK HUNTING NEWS....very little, but the paper normally distributed at this meeting says that the state FWC expects no changes in the Federal framework for next season and the season, bag limits, etc. should be the same.

Had a great session on and off the floor on FUTURE OF HUNTING IN FL. ideas....not a lot of duck stuff here but just general ways to get kids involved and my personal crusade to end the quota system "as we know it" to make for opportunities for the regular guy and his son to just "pick up the gun" and go hunting one afternoon or the next morning on public land near by on impulse.

Big change on snook....squeeze the tail measurement takes one inch off the current slot. I sent a FWC bulletin on this out on the Yahoo email.

Spent a lot of time, and spoke, on the need to increase revenue....the FWC has a 13 million dollar short fall predicted....by raising license fees, charging old dead beats like me a set fee ($20 ?) to get the Federal co pays....Fees have not been raised since the 1980s. Suggested any new funds go to LEO salarys...they are losing the good ones to police and sherrif departments. This all from a series of meetings the "interest groups" attended for over a year. Mostly by teleconference to Tall. from around the state. UW-F gets a lot of good will out of this!!!!!!

It's funny how when we discussed a low cost senior license that would allow Florida to get more federal dollars and also show a more realistic head count for hunters, Ken Haddad was quick to shoot it down. Now it's back on horizon. I guess someone decided retirees could shell out a few dollars afterall. :icon_mrgr

No big deal we'll start a collection and pay for the Old Man's license as long as he keeps going to all those meetings!

Actually the Governor shot it down. "NO NEW TAXES". We need to start lobbying for this one but we need to be sure the extra funding goes to the FWC and that no other funding gets cut back.

David is correct, the proposal never got to the legislature as the word was out "no new taxes or fees". There is a member of the FWC board who not only is put on the board by the governor (as they all are), but is also the "watch dog". There is a better chance in the next session for the program according to his guarded comments. I made it very clear ( a little podium pounding) that the FWC Board needed to stand up on the issue and that WE, and I mean all fishing, hunting groups not just us, would flood the legislature with supportive emails, letters etc. to overcome the knee jerk opponents.

Hopefully, we will get that chance.
