So who is going this weekend? I'm headed out Friday afternoon to camp and get settled in early. Taking along my 10 mo GSP to give the quail a go in the mornings then sit the deer stand in the afternoons. Hopefully I'll have some good stories to tell next week. You folks who are going best of luck and be safe out there.

Just got back from Green Swamp West archery hunt. I met James Stovall the guy who shot that record deer out there; seemed nice enough. I hope your hunt goes better than mine; the 20+ mph winds screwed everyone only 4 animals came out in 4 days. Missed a chance at an 8 on Monday too busy fighting with my poncho:mad: Oh well got Ft. Drum Gun starting on Saturday maybe my luck will change.

Yeah Joe thats where I'm headed. Gonna let my pup back a couple veteran dogs and learn the trade. Just taking it at his pace not mine. He has done real well on planted birds so we will see how he does on wild ones. Joe we will get you and Ironeyes out there in a few weeks. Sometime after the duck opener.

Aaron and Ironeyes good luck, those are both some nice places to try and bag a decent buck.

To much water here in the river for snipe.............All my places are covered up.

Keith......this is my first time hunting Prairie Lakes. It is a beaut of an area and its tough to find a good spot when the whole area looks good. Goin out next Wed. to scout up an area. Good Luck at B/C.

I got my Three Lakes buck saturday. Four years old, 130 lbs, nine points, inside rack spread 13.5 inches. The G4 on one side was less than an inch or it'd been a ten..... My second nine pointer, someday I'll get a real 10 pointer. :D

Congradulations Larry. Sounds like your off to a good start.

Well the quail hunting was alot of fun. We stayed close to the roads so we wouldn't hunt up on any deer hunters. We whistled up 2 coveys at day break. Started out with four GSP's on the ground. Worked them up close to where we located the first covey and I put a long lead on my pup. One of the adult dogs went on point and another dog backed her. What a preety site. Took my pup a little closer to get wind of the covey and he got a little birdy but before we got close enough one of the other hunters sent his dog in for the flush. The rise was about 12 birds and we took 2 from that flush. It was tuff to only handle the dog and not participate with the shooting but it will be worth it when he gets better trained. We marked where the majority of the birds landed and hunted that way. I took my pup off his lead and he started casting real good. Before we new it the dogs were on point again so we sent in the flusher and took 3 more birds. That was my dogs first retreive. He brought me one of the birds that my partner shot to my hand. Man what a feeling. We felt we took enough from that covey and drove to find the other covey but didn't find them after an hours hunt so we called it a day.

Sunday morning we didn't locate any birds at daybreak so we went to an area that usually holds some quail. Boom a hundred yards from the truck two dogs go on point then the covey flushes. I shoot one and wouldn't you believe it I send my pup out and he brings it to my hand. I think I smiled for at least an hour after that. We found another covey about an hour later but my shooting skills let me down and I got the look from my pup. Didn't take him long to learn the look. Then the rains came and we packed it in. It was a great opening weekend. Can't wait until I can get another day off.

Keith:

Sounds like you'll have a good hunt partner in your new gsp.

I took my gps. And I still got turned around. Maybe I need a gsp instead (after my lab gets older). :)

I bumped a covey in 3 lakes while I was scouting.
