If you're a Broward County resident with some animal magnetism, good customer service skills, and more than just a bit of nerve, the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program could be looking for you.

The program administered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is taking applications for nuisance alligator trappers in southern Broward.

"A few thousand nuisance alligators are harvested every year in the state of Florida. Broward County is one of our busier counties for alligator calls," said Gabriella Ferraro. and FWC spokeswoman. "It's an area with a dense population and many canals and retention ponds, so you will find alligators. And some of those alligators become a nuisance."

Potential nuisance trappers must have clean criminal backgrounds and no fish or wildlife law violations.

The current job posting gives preference to applicants who live south of Interstate 595.

Nuisance gator trappers in Florida work on a contract basis and, despite the number of nuisance animals, it's not a get-rich-quick job. Trappers are primarily compensated by selling the hides and meat of alligators they catch, though they're also eligible for a small expense reimbursement from the FWC for each alligator they trap. Most nuisance trappers have other sources of income, according to state officials.

Oh, and along with having their own trapping supplies and equipment, applicants are also asked to assume their own personal health and safety liability during the trapping process.
