Unfortunately the main cell at STA 1 W is almost dry and few ducks are in it. This is due to the hurricane damage that closed the cell....it had water for a few weeks, but with the current dry weather it is draining out.
There are ducks in the south and east cells, but they are mostly cattail monocultures with a few openings.
I spoke with Jerry Krenz (SFWMD) today and he is working on various ways to continue the hunts at STA 1 W. I have suggested opening the currently closed road south to allow access to the south cell, there is open water about a mile down the road. I have suggested looking at access to the eastern cell via the road at the bend of Rt. 880 just past the iron bridge. This was the original entrance...but due to the electrical work on the towers knocked down by the storm is not open.
He is in the process of working through the bureacacy to see what can be done.......meanwhile, be advised hunting at STA 1W is difficult at best.
The cell with the trouble will be revegetated and should be excellent for next season.....I ask everyone to remember the STAs are open on an "as is" basis as the District works to remove the phosporous and we have to adjust to the Mission they have.
