Jerry Krenz gave a positive report on the work by the FPL on the STAs and will give us the final decision Weds. am. I will post it up.

Tom Kosier, Chief Env. Scientist....(he's in charge of the STAs) gave a presentation on the STA status after the storm. Included were several positive comments on the hunting!!!!! Most important, the damage done by the storm has shown that STAs with mixed vegetation and strips of protective emergent vegetation to protect the sumerged vegetation are best.....this means no more hydrilla only cells, but hydrilla will be in the mix, and the cattail monoculture is out of favor....meaning even more good marsh for hunting in the future if this thinking holds up.

We were able to thank Tom for his approval of hunting and let him know we understand the mission he has and we will work to be sure we are good stewards. I gave him a copy of the letter UW-F sends to all STA permit holders.

Fred Davis had obviously been hit by a number of emails and letters on the loss of the boat ramp on Kissimmee Lake as he came with a presentation, including slides, which basically said no decision has been made and there may be a need to build a proper ramp on other nearby land. (Thanks to all who sent out those messages...THEY DO WORK!).

A member had noted new SFWMD "blue" signs on Lake Kissimmee shuting off more marshes....Fred said a 600 acre area was signed, but he knew of no other changes. I expect a detailed description of the areas observed by our member and I will present that to Fred for comments.

I mentioned to Fred that several additional access problems had come up recently and I would contact him when I had details.

Newton: Thanks for the continued updates on the condition and accessibility of the STA's. I will be anxiously awaiting your word from the WMD regarding whether they will be open for opening weekend of duck hunting. Many of us with permits have had a long week so far awaiting their decision. Please post as soon as you know. I'm sure you will get plenty of hits on the website tommorrow. Keep up the good work. :icon_salu
