The last two seasons I hunted strictly with bwt decoys. I talked with local hunters in my area and they used mallard hens. I purchased 12 mallard hen decoys to incorporate into my 12 bwt decoys. I was planning on using only 6-8 of the mallard hens. In the spread would it be better to seperate the bwt from the mallard hens or put them in groups together? Up north we always used one type of hen and drak(black or mallard) in the decoy spread. Does anyone else mix species in spreads.

We mix all of them together. Mottleds(mallards for you new guys and gals), Teal, widgys, pinner, coots and a few bright black and white divers as well.

I use a mix of dekes. I use pins, mallard hens (for mottleds), teal, and bluebill/ringers. I set mine up in pods of like dekes. I put the divers on the outer fringes, and mix the puddlers closer in. I set up the pods with shooting lanes between them for the ducks to cup into. That has worked very well for me.

We gun alot in the salt and run a large diver spread, then teal, widgeon and a few shovelers off to one side. We also put a couple of hand painted mottleds off of the other puddlers. The mottleds seem to drop right into those 3 or 4 mottled dekes every time. When in freshwater we toss out about a dozen coots to.
