Not a lot of duck stuff on the agenda....just the item the Commission routinely votes on each year to set up the State waterfowl seasons within the Federal guidelines...Since numeric days for the "Saturday opener" and the "split" are different each year a vote has to be taken to move those dates.
UW-F volunteers have been working at the Beau Turner Youth Conservation Center for several years on a number of projects, including doing the duck hunting sessions during the Youth Camps. We also have a long record at the Osceola Youth Camps. The FWC and the FWC's foundation, Florida Wildlife Foundation, are puttings together a group of Youth Conservation Centers modeled after the one at Beau Turner across the state. Plans are of at least five. As part of the FUTURE OF HUNTING IN FLORIDA organization UW-F is joining several other groups, including the Florida Sportsmans Conservation Association, to promote and help with the establishment of these camps...and we will certainly continue and expand the volunteer duck hunting seminars. We attended a special FWC meeting with the Commissioners to preview the work and progress. This event was the day before the formal Commission meeting.
Because of the controversial "Fox/Coyote Pen Dog Chase" issue not a lot of time was left for anything else. Over 100 "public comments"! Pen "chasing" (I refuse to call it "hunting") was banned by the Commissioners.
Crossbows were approved for Private Land Only deer hunting during Archery Season.
Rifles and shotgun shot size larger than 2 were banned in Spring Turkey Season on WMAs, WEAs, Enviromental Areas and Miscellanous Areas.
The concern about the new law placing the FWC as the final approver for local governments' rules regarding "motor restrictions" (68D-21) was expressed and I personally was reassured by Col. Brown and Don Coyners that the intent was not to change any of the current rules and, in fact, made the FWC the one with the power to prevent potential problems for motor boats.
