Watched this site last season and decided to start posting. I have been duck hunting the past two seasons in florida( before delaware bay) and have had mild success. I have only been hunting the everglades and mostly see bwt, mottleds, and the occasional hooded merganser. I only made it out three times last year but plan on getting out a lot more this year. I have honed most of my skills for where I have been hunting with the exception of calling. I have only been using a standard mallard quack. I really don't call that much the teal just flew in during the mini season, we shot 2 before the bugs chased us off. Was wondering if anybody uses a teal call in south florida and could recomend one. I did not recieve a quoata for the stations this year, but would like to hunt a least on other place possibly the big O. I hunt out of a canoe(do have trolling motor), could i get to areas on Okechobee worth hunting with this? Would be happy to trade glades hunt or back country fishing trip for an Okechobee hunt. I fish estero bay to chokoloskee. Looking forward to seeing seasonal post and posting my own reports. Thanks

Welcome to the site.

Most folks just use a whistle for teal or a couple soft quacks. There are many duck whistles out there and usually Wal-mart even has them.

Where are you located? There are a few places where you could hunt the lake with a canoe on a normal year. This year may be a little tough on the lake in general becuase of Wilma. Keep checking the site. We will be having our UW-F group hunt this year Jan 14/15 and it will be based out of Clewiston. Might be a good place to hook up with some members in your area. I follow the Joe Richter rule of guest hunters "To get an invite on my boat you gotta be a UW-F member" :icon_salu

Welcome to the site. Like Converted said a whistle is a good choice. I also use a Primos BWT call. Not calling much is a good thing in Fla. Most of our ducks don't make alot of calls. As far as any info on where to go in the south end of the state I can't be of any help. Join up with a membership and I'm sure one of our southern members might point you in the right direction on the members only forum. :icon_salu

of things you are probably hunting the 10,000 Islands WMA. That is the only place in the Glades where you can have success with just a canoe, in addition to the only place that you are going to find teal, mergs, and mottleds together unless you are in SOuthern Glades WMA and if you were you were not supposed to. I recomment the Joe Richter model of success. Become a member! You can also send me a private message or call me at 7862518427 and I will talk to you about places that will make you forget Delaware existed!

Welcome to the site. If you aren't a UWF member, I'd urge you to join. They work hard and get things done for Florida hunters. That's one of the main things that sets UWF apart from the other duck hunting orgs.
You can also meet a lot of great guys on go on some nice hunts with them.
As for calling, we mainly whistle to the appropriate ducks, including teal. We also use the teal "laugh" call. It works great for getting teal on the water to swim to your dekes. Then you can "jump them up" and get shots when they are flying away. We also use mallard quacks on mottled ducks. Past that, some guys use the diver "brrrrrrrrrr" call. One thing is for certain, callind doesn't work here like it does up north. Kind of like rattling for bucks, same thing.

Welcome B-diggs!!!!! I have like six or seven calls on my lanyard, but I think its more for looks than use. :booty: You really don't use your calls too much down here in Florida. I use a "brrrrrrrr" call like Rut was saying for Ringers. I think birds are immune to calls here.

Like Alex said, I also think you must be hunting 10,000 islands. Thats the only legal hunting place in the Glades that I could think would hold mergansers. There's a few spots at the lake that you could hunt out of a canoe, but I'm not sure it would be very productive. Your best bet is to give Alex a call or pm him. I'm sure he could help you out. Make plans for this seasons get together. I'm sure its going to be a great time, and you could probably hook up with somebody to hunt somewhere different.
