HURRICANE WILMA FORCES SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WMA CLOSURES

October 20, 2005
CONTACT: Dani Moschella, public information coordinator, (561) 625-5122 x105

The current track and threat of Hurricane Wilma is prompting the closure of more Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) facilities.

Picayune Strand Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and the Division of Forestry’s portion of Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest will be closed to public access at 5 p.m. today. The FWC portion of the Okaloacoochee Slough WMA remains open through Saturday to allow for the scheduled dove hunt.

All FWC offices in Monroe County are closed for business through Friday and the Big Cypress WMA remains scheduled to close at 12:01 a.m. Friday, following federal closure of Big Cypress National Park. The Jetport Tract of the Corn Dance Unit in the Big Cypress WMA remains closed by a previous FWC executive order due to high water.

Public access will be restored once the storm passes and the areas have been declared safe. For further information on status of these closures and details on when facilities may reopen, visit MyFWC.com.
