Goose Lake, Harvey, ND early October 2009. Diesel's first season. 1 1/2 year old Chessie, trained by Mike Sommers, JH after 5 tries. Retrieved this Can on his second day of "real" hunting. I love these dogs - have 5 but will admit they definitely are not for everyone! If you want a retrieving machine get a Lab! If you want a best friend that will protect you with his life get a Chessie.

Pretty popular cross in Louisiana. They call them Levee dogs there. Locals claim they can hunt hogs and retrieve ducks too! I know for a fact they will guard your truck or boat when you stop for a beer! Also a good dog to leave with your stuff when you check in at the STA in the morning.

There's a 10-month started chessie on Gundogbreeders.com. I own a littermate to this dog. Though she hasn't had any real hunt training yet, she is very birdy. This is my little girl back in October during our N. Dakota hunt.

Now that we started this thing I just have to show you guys "Bear". He's my once-in-a-lifetime chessie. I've owned 10 chessies over the years. This guy is a person in a dog suit. He's my best friend, constant companion and personal bodyguard. He's never had any hunt training. The little retrieving he's done for me is done Eastern Shore style (throw a rock!)
I love this dog. He's a great ambassador for the breed.

Welcome! Those are some nice dogs. As a reminder, there's other dogs that are REALLY brown and won't rock the boat:

And pretty versatile:

Beautiful! Now THAT's a Brown Dog!
Who makes the DU vest? A lot of Boykin owners have a hard time finding a vest that fits very well without extra tailoring, except for the Avery in extra small.

The vest is a Avery Large 18" neck and 28" chest. He was the pic of the litter and weighs 40 lbs. Bruno will be 4 years old this June and is one of the best. Right know he's eyeing me as I picked his vest up he thinks he's going hunting. He's a good boy....Hootie

We love Boykins, too! Dogs are like ice cream - most people love all flavors, they just prefer soime more than others. Hootie's Boykin, Bruno, is a great dog. Lives to retrieve birds, travels good in the truck, and is a great companion. I guess I'm just hung up on chesapeakes. Grew up around a few my friends had in the 60's. Never got over them. They just have a little easier time with some of the 18-20 lb. giant Canadas we shoot in the fall.

Maysport, my boykin comes from Alamo, Ga. Thre's a woman that breeds them. What was cool is when I went to pic out my dog she had a baby pool full of water and the whole litter was in the water swimming. It was funny as heck. They were raised outside on a farm near the tractor shed because of the loud noises, he was never gun shy. Tell you the truth he was a natural. He's a little stubborn on the hand signals until he gets fustrated. He wants to find the bird on his own. He has a good nose.
Maybe we should have a brown dog day and all meet up. I go thru Jacksonville about every other week...Hootie

Hootie, I think I may have met you this past year at a gas station. I can't remember if I was fishing or hunting, but I talked to a guy with 2 boykins and either one of them was named Bruno, or he was making reference to Bruno's lines.

My memory fades after long days fishing/hunting. I don't remember either. They were great looking dogs! I was asking about how much they shed. Maybe I was in the Melbourne area....
