I am a new forum member and interested in hearing a discussion of calling by Fla duckhunters. Right now I know nothing about this subject and feel like I am missing a lot. I hunt a lot of Ringnecks and Woodies up here in NFla and hardly ever see a Mallard, Pin or other typical 'callable' ducks.

I do of course try the "BRRRRR" thing with my mouth for Rings but dont really think it has ever helped. Anybody out there call for Ringnecks? Teal? How about success w/Woodie calls? I am interested in advice on calls and especially videos/tapes to learn for these.

I've BRRRRRed into a mallard call to working ringers; any wood made mallard call will work.

Teal I use a Haydel blue wing:

and

a Duck Commander green wing:

Woodies I use a Haydel woodie whine:

If those are the primary species you are targeting they should do the job. :)

I just sit there silently while Joe calls to them. Once they are in range, I open up. My only call is "WOO-HOO" as they splash down!!! Thanks Joe!!! :D

Yes, But you are so good at the "WOO- HOO".... You put such enthusiasim in it!:D ;)

As for calling technique..... get a buddy and have him get a couple hundred yards away and call to him.... he will be able to tell you how you sound.... try not to call Too loudly or too quickly(cadence) Most importantly...If the birds are comming..SHUT UP!! If they turn off try and coax them back with calling. Too much(or poor quality) calling is worse than none at all. Remember this...birds that have made it to florida have been called at the whole time....and by some better callers too...even a bird brain will learn that alot of calling is BS.....
I like calling to birds in the off season scouting trips...sit in the first light gray and listen.....then call .... if you are sounding good... the birds will let you know !:)

BWT - Haydels teal call
GWT - Whistle
puddlers - Echo Timber Cocabola or Gaston Acrylic Field
Woodies - Duck Commander Woodie call (I don't think anything really works on the woodies)
Divers - BRRRRRRL into the Gaston (not sure this really works either :D)

Most of the calling here in FL I think should be what I consider "attention getteing". Just get the birds to take a look, then sit back and hope they like your location and spread. I have tired aggressive calling for puddlers and it is effective the first weekend, but then after that have found it will flare birds - especially the mottleds. Gadwall however seem to like it. :D:D:D

I burr at wingtips and a**holes, once maybe twice at the most and shut up. If they like it they'll turn if not they probably werent going to anyway;)
I've worked a bunch, and drove off a bunch, all you can do is practice. Try keeping quiet if you've dropped a drake out of a pair, 9 out of 10 times the hen will come back to find her mate and come in burring like mad then try to imitate that.

For wood ducks, either get a wood duck call or a pintail whistle and call "kooh eee" into the call.

Ringnecks like to circle alot before landing, so after then go by, give the "brrrrr" or a quack.
