View Full Version : Ithaca 37 Featherweight 12 Guage pump
I am looking at a used one for $275.
What is the good, the bad and the ugly on this gun?

Basically it's all good. Depending on the year it may be chambered for 2-3/4" only, many were fixed choke barrels, if it's fixed mod it will cover most situations. The bottom eject is nice for keeping empties containted and off your partner. It's a very light gun with a smooth action. Ithaca is out of business again so there is no manufacturer support but most gunsmiths have parts and are familiar with these guns. I shoot a mid 70's model with a newer 26" barrel w/ tubes. I still mainly use the mod choke and I don't have any problems with 2-3/4" loads on ducks. I will do a thorough cleaning once a year and with all the crap I put the gun through it has never failed me. I love mine and will continue to shoot it as my primary gun.

My .02 worth.... You can't go wrong with almost any pump. My son has shot a Mossberg for 15 seasons( last year he had that Nova that he won) and Remington, Ithaca, and Browning along with the Benelli are very good. as Phil said, the bottom eject is nice.

You can't go wrong with that weapon. They were built solid and have a pretty good following, especially with lefties as the shells come out the bottom not if front of their faces. :icon_rabb

Nope...I said exactly what I meant!
"any instrument or instrumentality used in fighting or hunting; "he was licensed to carry a weapon" as per wordreference.com

Not trying to start any arguements... :icon_cool Lord knows we've heard enough of them!
Just trying to point out that the word Weapon sounds more like you are going to use it to attack someone. Where the word Firearm simply describes a pistol or rifle. And since hunters sometimes are so disliked by certain groups of people... It's just my opinion (& yes I know what they say about opinions!) anyway, it's my opinion that by using the word firearm, you will be less likely to give a negative image to some people. :idea1: And we as hunters need more people "on our side" as opposed to more people hating us.

Karen, An interesting perspective....Maybe this is the "softer side" that men often overlook...Men are often heard exclaiming " What did I say that was so bad" I never really put a negative to either word but see where someone might. The word weapon could be either offensive or..defensive.
That said, I doubt the choice of different word will make too much of an impact on an "anti". :) Unless an "anti" comes to know a hunter and then figures out that he is not some sort of a lunatic killer but rather someone who enjoys being outside and in nature.... The Anti's don't like fisherman either and they use neither "firearms" nor "Weapons" ...just poles and reels and hooks.
Isn't is bizarre.
The "Antis" have no problem going to Publix to get there Thanksgiving day Turkey or the burgers for the Sunday BBQ

That's always been my point. I have no repsect for an anti that eats meat. They let someone else kill and butcher supper, I prefer to do it myself. And (never start a sentence with and) much of my meat was not raised on a feed lot and filled with steriods and antibiotics.
Now if your an anti and if you only eat veggies, then at least your intelectually honest.

weap-on n. a device used in fighting a war; a device which can be used to harm another person. ( Websters Dictionary, copyright 1993 ). Say the word weapon and most people will think of violence, say firearm or sportingarm and people will think of a gun. You have learned well grasshopper! :icon_rabb Just my .02
