I have hunted Hickory Mound a couple of times with little success, but that was 2 yr ago during "low" h20 conditions. It is supposed to be at its best when water is up so have thought of trying this season.
Its a large impoundment on the coast that catches runoff from a large swampy area. Lots of what I call sawgrass interspersed with palms and some other brush.
Two yrs ago I scouted before Early Season and jumped a couple flocks of bwteal totalling about 150. Went back the next week for the season opening and only saw 10, only got shot at one flight of em. Went during regular season 3 yrs ago and saw few teal, shot none.
A buddy once told me that during high water times, it can attract mallards, pintail, wigeon in addition to teal, shovellers.

I hunted it a couple of times 3/4 years ago. Have bagged some teal. It has potential; just needs restoration. Last time I was up there I saw some buffleheads just outside of the impoundment. Sure hope it gets repaired soon.

I spoke with Steve Rockwood about this place..It is going to be a DU marsh project and they are doing some major work with water control structures. It was my understanding that hurricanes a few seasons back breached the dikes and the influx of saltwater messed up the impound. They will have a biologist stationed there when work is complete.
