Sid,
what is the price? How much more HP can you get out of this?

Sorry about that. I thought I had put it in there.
You can do a few things to it to add HP. There are the new iron mountain heads that MB sells, the single Mikuni, and this motor will turn the big blade as well. He is asking $3950.00 for the motor.
I know in Lakeland there is a company called Geker Motors??? they do mods to these motors as well. There have been a couple of members that have taken them there and are very happy with their work. I don't know much about them. I think SSphonetaken his motor there and Zackestir
The motor brand new before shipping and tax is $4190.00 shipping is $400 and then tax. He is wanted more HP for a load carrying purposes. He hunts three people and a dog and needs the HP to get out of a hole.

I hunt with Brooks on a regular basis, and that motor makes for a sweet ride! With 3 of us, our gear, my dog, and 16 feet of Gatortrax we're still pushing 17mph. Its been run in mostly open water, but it will push through just about anything we can get ourselves into. The motor's in great shape, we're just entertaining the idea of going back to a longtail.

If you get that motor brand new, it'll cost you more than $4900.

Fullstrut I just want everyone to know I have nothing to do with Gecker and this customers motor has nothing to do with them either as far as any mods because this motor has not been modded it is a stock 23, the only mod to it is the camo paint job. Not quite sure why you chose this thread to put that but I just wanted to clarify. This motor is from a customer that is looking to upgrade to a larger motor. I understand your frustrations though and I know there are some who share your sentiments right now.

FastDuck, sounds like a good deal, wish I could enter the market right now but can't. I've been running longtails for years, and eventually will get a shorty. What do you recommend, a short or high transom model? What benefits are there to a high transom over a short transom, apart from reducing backwash better? I've noticed that high transom models generally run a few hundred dollars more new. Here in south Florida it is generally shallow water, hard bottom and my longtail short transom motor does the job for the most part. Would you say you sell more short transom motors than high transom? I drove my friend's 35 MB balanced shorty last season on a short transom jon boat, and I noticed that even with the motor trimmed up all the way, the prop still touched the water- is this normal? I know it is a "surface" drive but I would think you could tilt it clear out of the water. It was plumb easier to drive and turn than my longtail for sure.

In this thread it is only the motor. They are just wanting to upgrade the motor only. If you're looking for a good rig there is a 24hp Honda and a boat on here for sale that is a great buy. Not sure what budget you are looking at too but there is a great buy for 12,500 that is an Excel with a 6000 on it.

I can ask him. He might do it you never know. For less than that you can convert your 23 to a surface drive too.

May I ask why would you guys be thinking about switching back to a longtail motor. Im in the market and just wondering.
Thanks

tlocdiver, I am not sure that is the case. FastDuck sorry to digress on this post. I stated that I have driven longtails for a while (since 1989). Hardly anybody who gets a shortail goes back to a longtail. For my purposes, short runs, skinny water and hard bottom, the longtail suffices in a grand and economical way. Aniel asked about a trade. FastDuck suggested that there is a shortail drive unit so you can swap out the longtail drive and install the shortail for a lot less. I have actually thought of doing this with my 2004 27 Kohler longtail. I have decided to keep the longtail and down the road get a new shortail unit. I highly recommend a shortail mud motor and that 23 Vanguard is a much praised unit- light and strong. There are many upgrades and mods for that motor also if you want to go that way. Here and in other sites, the suggestions for 16-20' hulls is to go with the most HP you can afford. I know MB, PD make a 27 but most have gone on to the 35 Van. The bigger block offers more push, torque, speed, etc, and there seem to be a lot more mods and add-ons for the 35 than the 27. The 23 from what I have read, has plenty of market choices. My suggestion is to take a test drive with FastDuck or any of the other reliable dealers in this state. At this very time I am trying to to get a good friend to buy a new shortail- and not another longtail- he has arm and shoulder difficulties and the shorty is the ticket.

Very well said Raul. That is exactly what I was talking about. You can move your motor to a sport frame and sell your longtail frame as well. There is a lot of things you can do like Raul said that will increase torque and power as well. It is not much cheaper than buying a new one but it is an option.
