We just picked up an 8 month Coto de Tealur on Sunday from a breeder.

She gave us some of the food that she recommended and said we would be able to find at at Petco. One of my wife's co workers, who is into animals (Horses, dogs, cats, birds, etc) gave her a bag of some food, that she sells as an independent rep. (Along with a bunch of other stuff for the dog) My wife has a lot of confidence in this other person and truely believes she was trying to do the right thing.

My wife mixed it 1/2 & 1/2 with the other food the dog had been eating for the last couple of weeks. (Portions are about 1/3 cup 3 times a day) and shortly there after the dog vomited.

The rest of the day the dog was rather listness. Just slept, not interested in eating or drinking....just wanted to be comforted.

Any way of knowing if its a virus vs bad food??

We immediately stopped feeding the new food.

Thanks...

Puppy + New home + New food (even doing it right like you did) = Vom/Dia in many cases. I agree to go back to the regular food, feed her a smaller amount for the next few days and then try the new food if you really want to switch her to it at about 7/8-1/8 ratio and increase by 1/8. She may just be sensitive to diet change.

Of course, it could be bad food, so you could maybe return it.

It was going on 36 hours without food so we brought the pup to vet. Turned us on to canned food. MIxed it 50/50 couple of times, now reducing canned to dry ratio. Everything back to normal.....Thanks for the advise.
