Ok guys, right now I'm just sending out feelers, figuring out what I may need, prices, etc. Basically this is most likely for next years season.
I already have an aluminum boat, 14 ft alumacraft with the modified V. Its a wide one though, not the light topper one.
I'm looking to get a mud-motor for it, but don't know much more than they run in the mud :smileinbo. Right now I have a 25 outboard, but I don't really need the speeds that I'm getting on it. I've had a 9.9 outboard on it, and it moved along well enough, so would like a 10 hp be adequate? Short or long tail? Whats the pros/cons of them? Thanks

I have a 25 gdlt on a 1546 alweld , it will take me were i need to go but it not that fast , i only get 15 or 16 mpr with two guys and gear. The surface drives are alot smoother to drive and are alot faster. Is your boat a welded boat or a riveted boat. Welded boats are recomended for mud motors but riveted boats will work as well , but to much H.P is not good with boats that have a riveted transom. Thereare alot of folks on this site that can help get you in the right direction for a set up that fits you. My longtail is the best thing ive got since i first met my wife. lol . Just kidding.

Contact a fellow member Sid Thysen (screen name:FastDuck), I believe you are not far from him, he is in DeLand, FL. He will give you all the skinny on anything mud, and he will set you up nicely if you decide to buy from him. Just to clarify, I am not part of Fast Duck Motors, just one of many satisfied customers. Sid is the nicest guy to deal with as many here can testify to that.

I second Fastduck, he helped me out with my mud motor purchase. I basically have the same set up as you and I bought a 20hp long tail that he had in used. I am very happy with the motor. I was running a 20hp outboard on my boat and yes you will lose speed but you will be motoring through place you would have never been able to with an outboard.

I'm gonna call him up after the holiday. Everyone seems to say he's the man in my area.

Not even close, but maybe on your waters it works ok. I'd be happy to run my motor next to any outboard in the waters we're running on Lake O.
BTW, I'll be sure to bring a tow rope because you certainly won't be leaving on your own power.
