Well ... my son managed to take his first deer this morning. :D On Lake Woodruff NWR ... in the St. Johns River swamp ... about calf-deep in water.
He made a 20-22 yard archery shot on a 110 lb. doe. It only went 75-80 yards from where he shot it - to where we found it. :) Which I was thankful for ... it "jumped the string" on him.
It was a lot of fun showing him how to trail/track a deer in a very tough location.
His head has swelled a couple of sizes. ;)
Of course, I haven't even seen a deer yet .... :(

I'm sure your proud of your boy. Congrats! I sat with my boy 16yo Sat morn and we had a doe feed to within 65 yards. I had to hold him back from shooting. He kept telling me he could make the shot and I let him know the right thing to do was pass and try for a better shot opportunity later. That evening he wiffed on a hog at close range 21 yards and I said I told you so:D . Lessons well learned. Congrats again to your son.

Way to go Russel.
As for the swelling, as with all things that tend to cause a young mans head to swell, this too will pass:p
Hopefully I'll see you 2 in the marsh again this coming season

I am proud of him. :D
Right now, he's the deer expert. Sooner or later, he'll realize that I did all the scouting, put up the stands, put in the flag trails, and all of the other necessary work. He just came in for the easy part. ;)
I took pictures ... but they haven't been developed yet. As soon as they are ... I'll get pictures posted.

It was Chet!!! This area is a wetland place. They took bows and shotguns. The deer just came out first. ;) :p :D
Their will never be a deer that feels as good as the first, but each time after the first your heart races just a little bit giving you some of that excitement. Please make sure you send Florida Outdoorsman a picture and we will post it under a new section we are putting up, just for the kids this season who have taken their first animal, fish what ever. My e-mail for the web site is info@floridaoutdoorsman.com. Please be sure to include in the subject line something about photos and first time deer.
