Anybody here have experience converting a longtail to a shorty frame? I've got a 2004 27 Kohler MB longtail in very good condition and the most cost effective way would seem to switch the longtail frame to the shorty one (MB carries them). The listed $2600 price of the short frame is appealing. Is this a good idea or just sell my motor and plunk down the balance for a new shorty? I am in no hurry but probably would want to make the switch after this season in time for next. I've got a 1648 Grizzly hull- not ideal I know but does the job, just hankering for a little more push and drivability. I welcome any suggestions.

I have done a few. For the money it is well worth it. You get everything you need. It is not hard to do. It is about a 2 hour job. All you do is basically move the motor convert the wiring to the new style handle. You will enjoy the conversion.

Thank you FastDuck! Sounds good. I figure if the Kohler gets me 20 mph with two hunters and gear I will be in heaven- when I do cross open water I like the shorty's better and easier driving characteristics, a bit easier for trailering too. I would prefer no "electric clutch", knowing of a few burnouts and not understanding the advantage of such an option, and I don't need reverse, being used to the use of a stout push pole all these years. By the way are you located in Florida?

Raul, I have done that exact conversion for another member here on the forum. Perhaps he can speak to the advantages of the short tail relative to his long tail. I can tell you that in my opinion it is well worth it given the increased access to areas that you will be able to hunt due to the speed increase alone.

BTW, I am the Mud Buddy South Florida rep covering Palm Beach to the Keys. I would be happy to quote you on a conversion and answer any questions you might have.

The advantage of the electric clutch is when you are in open water putting out/ picking up decoy spreads you can just throw it in neutral. I can also crank the motor up at the ramp and let it warm up and not have a prop spinning. I think it is helpful but not a showstopper if you dont have it.

Thank you both, Juan and contractor! Juan, I will definitely be contacting you when I can make the move after the season. Contractor, if the bolt-on comes with the neutral feature that would be great, otherwise I've been without neutral and reverse for years so not a biggy.

Is that for a short transom (16")? Man, that is tempting! Any creative financing strategies?:) I could ask my credit union about terms. Mudman, can you PM me a ballpark figure?
