Based on y'alls experiences, what are some suggestions, do's/dont's for introducing the dogs to guns?

This process takes a friend, but I have introduced a dog to a gun in a couple of ways. But one common way is start with a few marks with a gun 100 yards away, have him fire and then throw a mark and let him retrieve. Then continually move the gun closer and closer until you are shooting right next to him. If he spooks or looks scared move the gun back and reassure him.

I don't think you will have a problem though. N

That's exactly what I did. Easy enough at home, .22 blanks for a nail gun from Home Depot in a .22 revolver.

Every Dog is diferent .Some are ready right out of the box. Don't take a chance . It's easyer to do it right than to fix later.
It should start while they are still with mom.

I got Tank as a dropout because of Gun shyness.

Start with a cap gun like the one you used when you were a kid and far away and then work closer. Note any reaction. feeding time or while training would be good.
Then work your way to a 22 blank, shot gun
Remember lots of positive treatment for no reaction or flinching
a good dog will get it.

Took Bristol out on Saturday. Got about 50yds away (had her sitting on the Ruff Stand) and threw a dummy and shot (gun pointed in opposite direction of the dog). Didn't even phase her. So I moved closer and closer doing the same drill. After about 5 shots I was basically right next to her and the only time she flinched is when an ejected shell hit her in the head.... :)

I borrowed the Video "GUN DOG, by Richard Wolters", it was filmed by another guy and they demonstate what Newton was talking about, using a friend with a gun about 50 to 100 yards away. They shot shotgun blanks. I have used a $5 cap gun from Wal-Mart that worked well.

DDD- that might be where I got that from...but I can't remember. I know it works though!
